TAUNTON (Vivary) A have won the West Somerset League Division 1 title for the first time since 2014.

The league involves clubs from Minehead to Wellington, Taunton, Bridgwater and Burnham-on-Sea in two divisions of 11 men’s teams.

Although Taunton A lost their first and last games, the eight played in between were won by such a large margin that at the end of the season they were the clear winners.

In Division 2, Taunton B finished third (behind two A teams), with six wins from nine games.

The C team finished a creditable sixth, with four wins.

Meanwhile, Taunton bowlers travelled to North Petherton for a four-rink mixed friendly.

The green was running fast, but Taunton won well, by seven shots (80-73).

Skips: M Zussman 21-17; D Bridgman 22-16; K McAndrew 21-18; A Nicholson 16-22.

Taunton hosted Wellington for a five-rink mixed friendly.

After a shower, the sun came out and a complete game was played, but the hosts struggled and Wellington won by 19 shots (96-77).

*** IN the regional final of the National Top Club, Watchet were drawn against the mighty Kings B.C. Torquay, a club littered with England internationals.

The fixture was played at Cullompton on a green that was very poor, but excuses apart, Watchet were out-bowled, and well beaten.

Scores: 2 wood singles - Jack Groves lost 16-6; 4 wood singles - Sam Steel lost 21-9; pairs - A Bryant, Neil Williams lost 23-14; triples - Ian Trunks, David Steel, Luke Townsend won 19-11; fours - Ryan Hooper, Mike Webber, Andrew Sully, Steve Hooper lost 28-8 On Saturday, Watchet A were away to Street A in a near top-of-the-table clash.

Watchet had to travel one short, so would have to play with three on one rink and lose 25 per cent of their score.

They lost on two of the rinks, and by seven shots.

Watchet took the win by 10 points to two (65-61), boosting their survival hopes, but it may go down to the last game on September 1, at Westlands.
