TAUNTON & Pickeridge club captain Andy Willett, Phil King (captain in 2017), John Snell (2016 captain) and director of golf Simon Stevenson made history last week by winning the prestigious Saunton Jug.

The prize was competed for by 28 clubs from across the six West of England counties; a team from each club is divided into a pair to play on each of Saunton’s East and West courses, at the end of which the scores from the better ball stableford were added up.

John Snell and Phil King scored 42 points around the East course and Andy Willett and Simon Stevenson scored 40 around the West course, giving them the best combined total and making them the winners of the Saunton Jug.

Friday’s Medal round was won by Jeremy Browne with an impressive net 63, John Foster was second with 68, ahead on countback of third-placed Anton Hotham who returned with the same score.

On Tuesday, the Ladies’ Section took part in the Monty Banks RAFA Stableford, named in honour of Flt Lt E. H. Banks MBE, who was Captain of T&P in 1974, who donated the trophy.

Everyone taking part paid an extra £1 entry fee which means that £40 will be donated to RAFA.

In the Silver Division, Gill Shire, with 35, was the winner, ahead of Carole Rotheram who edged into second place ahead of Heather Crump on countback after both scored 33.

Sarah Allan won the Bronze Division with 39 and also secured the Monty Banks Trophy.

Jackie Pike was second with 38, while Marlene Ewens was third on countback from Anna Rees after both returned with 37.

Twos were recorded by Heather Crump, Rose Jarvis and Janet Kingston.

The 9-Hole Stableford was won by Susan Gawne-Cain with 20, one ahead of Jean Kennedy with 19.

Sunday’s 3 Ball Open on Sunday attracted a field of over 80, who enjoyed the slightly cooler weather and excellent course conditions.

Mary-Jo Shepherd, James Shepherd and Trevor French were the winners with a total of 80 points.

Second place went to Georgia Richards, Pete Richards and Caroline Cooper (73), while third were John Godley, Ian Sutcliffe and Glynn Webber (72).

*** VIVARY Golf Club Ladies’ captain Ruth Crooks has held a successful Charity Day in aid of Cancer Relief.

Everyone who played thoroughly enjoyed the day in perfect weather.

A super two-course lunch followed the competition.

With 36 points on countback and winner of the Gove Cup was Janet Vicks; Second, with 35 on countback, Dale Knight; and third, 35 on countback, Claire Hannigan.

John Woodward, who sponsored the hole-in-one, presented the prizes with Ruth Crooks.

The putting competition was won by Vanessa Worden with 11 putts, while the Longest Drive was won by Ange Tinnion.

Nearest the Pin in 2 on the 14th was won by Janet Vick.

The Men’s Competition was won by Chris Evans with 45 points.

*** THE Seniors’ Trophy for the Reg Griffiths Greensome at Vivary Golf Club was a close-run thing but, in the end, it went to John Shove and Pete Jeffery. They scored a tidy nett 57.6, a shade better than Bob Clayden and Dave Hawkins on net 58.8.

Gwynne Ward and Barry Hembrow came third with 61.6.

Seniors captain Phil Nicholls won another tightly fought-out competition, claiming on countback the Kelvin Davies Memorial Medal, with a nett 64.

Graham Morris took second on the same score, and Charles Hall (nett 65) came third.

The Captain’s Cup recorded some lower scores, with three players coming home with nett 61.

On countback Bob Clayden was placed first, with Dave Willis second and Bob Stock third.

The Tudor Humphreys Stableford, which is now an annual event, produced some excellent results, with John Fisher topping the list with 43 points.

Keith Parker was close behind on 42 points, and Steve Berry took third with 41 and a better back nine than Pete Jeffery (also 41).

*** ANDREW Ford won the Friday Stableford Competition at Oake Manor, scoring 39 points.

Simon Mankin was second also with 39 points but lost out on countback, while Robert Clark came third with 37 points and Neil Blackmore fourth also with 37 points.

Bob Tye was the clear winner of the Saturday Medal Competition with a nett 68, Daniel White came second in Division 1 with nett 70, Richard Beesley was third also with nett 70 and Jason Brock was fourth with nett 74.

Mark Woolliscroft won Division 2 scoring nett 72, Richard Shepherd was second with nett 74, Neil Watson third also nett 74 and Guy Backhouse fourth (nett 78).

Mike Eastmond continued his winning streak by winning Division 1 of the Seniors Stableford on Monday.

Mike scored 37 points, Phillip Gadd came second with 36 points, Dave Kinnear third also 36 points and Ian Earley fourth with 34 points.

Bob Trott won Division 2 scoring 37 points, David Elliott was second with 36 points, Trevor Cook was third with 34 points and Ian Hockey fourth also with 34 points.

Pam Akers won Division 1 of the Ladies Stableford Competition on Tuesday with 34 points, Bev King came second with 32 points and Janet Howe third on 25 points.

Mo Young won Division 2 scoring 37 points, Pat Snellings came second also on 37 points, Julie Parkes was third with 35 points and Betty Marney fourth with 34 points.

Suzie Pitt won Division 3 with 37 points and Diane Darlow came second with 30.

Simon Malloy won the Men’s Thursday Stableford Competition scoring an excellent 41 points, Phillip Gadd was second with 38 points, Robert Clark third also on 38 points and Steven Pinn fourth with 36 points.
