TAUNTON manager Leigh Robinson will be looking for his side to be more clinical as they head into a big Bank Holiday weekend.

It took the Peacocks until the 86th minute to score the winner at Kings Langley last weekend, and now they take on two unbeaten sides - Hendon at home tomorrow, then Tiverton Town away on Monday (both ko 3pm).

Robinson said: “It was a relief to get the win [at Kings Langley] in the end.

“We played some fantastic football – as in the first 20 minutes at Weymouth – but we couldn’t put the game to bed, and let them back into it.

“But we kept going and deservedly won the game – it would just have been nice to be more clinical.

“We were so dominant in the first half, at Weymouth and at Kings Langley, so we should have been out of sight.”

He added: “It was not difficult [to pick the team up after the Weymouth loss], as they’re such a determined bunch, and were desperate to get back on track.

“We played a really good game and showed good attitude.

“They’re adapting really well [to the new league], but I’m not surprised by that.

“The majority of the squad have already played at this level or above, and we’ve shown what we can do against higher teams in cup competitions in the last few seasons.”

Robinson expects to have a full squad for the Bank Holiday weekend, though the club are still waiting on international clearance to play Douglas Camilo.

Regarding the two matches in 48 hours, Robinson added: “You want to have your key players out on Saturday, but hope they come through unscathed for Monday.

“The modern game is so physical, we will have no choice but to rotate.”

And in terms of the Tiverton rivalry, he said: “We understand the personal pride of the fans, but we’re working towards a required number of wins.

“It’s a derby, the players know each other – it’ll be a nice change for us, as we’ve played a lot of new teams this season.

“We’re all looking forward to it but there’s no special emphasis.

“The best team between Taunton and Tiverton will be decided by the league table at the end of April.”

*** SATURDAY’S visitors to the Viridor Stadium have made an encouraging start to the new season, under new manager James Gray.

Based in north west London, Hendon FC finished third in last season’s Isthmian Premier, before losing the playoff final on penalties to Dulwich Hamlet.

Transferred to Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division South for 2018/19, the Greens secured a 1-1 draw away to Frome Town on the opening day, then beat Walton Casuals 3-0 and Farnborough 2-1.

Young striker Ricardo German has two goals to his name, and will be one to watch on Saturday.

The last competitive meeting between the sides, also in Taunton, was in November 2004, in the second round of the FA Trophy.

The Peacocks had their chances with the score at 0-0, but goals from Rene Street and Ross Pickett (2) secured a 3-0 away win.

They had previously met, again in the FA Trophy, in 1982 – Hendon winning 5-1 at Loftus Road (their own ground being snow-bound).

In front of almost 1,000 people, Taunton struggled on the artificial (‘Omniturf’) pitch; the Gazette sportsdesk’s very own Bob Summerhayes was in the dugout for the visitors.
