WELLINGTON and Bishops Lydeard take a break from league action this weekend as the FA Vase takes centre stage.

Welly have a 'home' tie against Saltash to be played at Cullompton Rangers FC (Speeds Meadow) as the cricket club still have use of the Playing Field.

They have a full side available, aside from Kai Fisher – he is facing an FA charge following his red card against Westbury United.

Their opponents on Saturday have three wins and a draw from their four matches played in the Premier Division of the South West Peninsula League.

The Tangerines, by contrast, are pointless after three games in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division, having lost 5-0 at Plymouth Parkway last Wednesday.

Lydeard, who lost 5-0 themselves at home to Corsham last weekend, host fellow Western League First Division outfit Bishop Sutton on Saturday.

LOCAL league football returns to town this weekend, with Taunton’s Saturday and Sunday Leagues both getting underway for the 2018/19 campaign.

Last season’s Invest Southwest Taunton Saturday League champions, Middlezoy Rovers Reserves, have moved up into the Somerset County League, and so Division 1 is well and truly up for grabs.

Bishops Lydeard Reserves and Bridgwater Sports are likely to be among the main challengers after solid seasons last time out.

Westonzoyland, last year’s surprise package, will also look to build on a fourth-placed finish in 2017/18.

Galmington Dragons, Redgate and Watchet Town Reserves are the new cowboys in town, after they earned promotion from Division 2.

The second flight they left behind features Bridgwater Sports Reserves and Minehead AFC Reserves, who will look to stake their claim.

They are joined by FC Castlemoat – the runaway champions – and North Curry from Division 3.

The third division features a whopping 15 teams, which includes the newly-formed Staplegrove Crusaders and Wellington A, transferred across from the Devon & Exeter League.

This Sunday sees the Keyline Taunton Sunday League get up and running, with Jim Jowett Cup ties dominating the opening weekend.

League-wise, Division 1 will be an intriguing prospect, with Tiger Old Boys – far too good to be in Division 3 last season – promoted up to the top tier.

Ash Rangers, Bathpool, FC Castlemoat, Hamilton, Mariners and Old Inn should provide a stiffer test for the Tigers from Bridgwater.

There are seven teams in Division 2 – including Huish Allstars and The Panthers – and another nine taking their places in Division 3.
