TAUNTON Town are looking to build on Monday's derby victory as they welcome Basingstoke to Wordsworth Drive on Saturday (3pm).

The Peacocks' 3-1 win at near neighbours Tiverton Town lifted them to second in the table, but the visitors are in good form themselves and sit fourth going into the weekend - both sides have 10 points from five matches.

Reflecting on Monday's result, Robinson told the County Gazette: “We knew the Tiverton game would be physical, and we had to defend set-pieces well and get tight to their strikers.

“It had the feeling of a one-off and we had the quality when it mattered.

“I think it helped going to three at the back, our more familiar system.

“Our defenders weren’t at their best on Saturday, but I had no doubt they would deliver a steely performance on Monday.”

Robinson praised captain Matt Wright and also Andrew Neal, who came on as substitute.

“Wright has had a great weekend, scoring crucial goals and producing a moment of magic with the cross [for Ollie Chamberlain’s goal]," he said.

“And as a leader he’s going from strength to strength.

“Neal didn’t play much football with Truro last season, and we felt the last 10 days had started to catch up with him.

“He was fresh when he came on, and set up the third goal when we were telling him to take it into the corner!

“His attitude does him real credit.”

There is still no news on the signing of Douglas Camilo, but Robinson was pleased to secure Brett Trowbridge’s return from Street.

“You’d have though international clearance [for Douglas] would not be so difficult in Europe,” he said.

“He’s chasing his old club, I believe the FA have given them a nudge, but we’re still in no-man’s land.

“Trowbridge gives us more option to go to three at the back.

“We heard he was available and he’s the perfect solution; he can play wide in a back three or as a sweeper.

“He’s highly intelligent and we know he’ll do a job for us.”

Opposition in focus

We asked Graham Merry, of the Basingstoke Gazette, for the lowdown on the Peacocks’ next opponents...

“Basingstoke Town are now in their third season in the Southern League Premier Division, but unlike the previously two campaigns, the side has not had to be rebuilt during the summer.

“So hence their solid start to this campaign, where they could have won their opening five games, if not for a late equaliser in their opener and a huge refereeing blunder in the loss against Poole.

“In the past two seasons, Terry Brown as manager worked wonders with a young squad, as they finished 12th and then 10th.

“Brown has stepped up to the director of football role this season, with his assistant from last term, Jason Bristow, back in the hotseat for their final season at their Camrose home.

“This is his second spell in charge, having previously guided them to their best ever finish in the Conference South.

“Town are a side who like to play football, and in Sam Smart and summer signing Zidane Akers they have two very dangerous wide men.

“Another new signing, Dean Stow, has taken on penalty-taking duties and is deadly from free-kicks.

“Hopes are high that Town can sign off their spell at the Camrose, by at least making the play-offs.

Player to watch: Sam Smart

“This lightning quick winger had a trial at Sheffield Wednesday during the summer and puts the fear of god into any defender who has to stop him.

“A youngster who looks destined for a higher level.”
