TAUNTON Titans centre Nick Mason believes there is "a really good ethos around the club" after his side secured a 62-24 opening day victory.

Mason scored four of the Titans' 10 tries as they put Worthing Raiders to the sword at the Commsplus Stadium yesterday.

"It was a great game and the boys did really well in attack; at the beginning of the week we'd have bitten your arm off for 60 points.

"The disappointing thing is letting them in for a few extra points at the end, but for the first game of the season, the win and bonus point in the bag, that's job done."

Mason is one of three Titans players - alongside Connor Baker and Isaac Dalton - who returned after playing in New Zealand for several months.

He said: "It's just a different rugby culture there; they're born and raised with it, they throw the ball about and it's very fast paced.

"It's nice to be back home playing with the Taunton boys again.

"Initially it was difficult [returning to the squad] because I came back with a bit of a hamstring injury, but I just got myself back involved.

"The core of the squad's pretty similar to last year, and Connor and Isaac are quality players, so they didn't struggle to get back into the swing of things."

There were several new signings on show for the home side on Saturday, with Jarrard Hayler and Sam Brown both scoring tries to cap off fine individual performances.

Mason said: "[The new players] have been quality. You saw out there today that Jarrard's an absolute workhorse, getting all over the pitch.

"Sam Brown went out to New Zealand as well last year and did well.

"There's just a really good ethos around the club at the moment, and while we don't want to get ahead of ourselves, it's looking positive.

"We said beforehand that we can't really compare ourselves to anyone until the first game starts.

"We don't really compare ourselves to other teams; we might have a look around us in December or January, but it's all about us and what we can do.

"At the moment the only target we have is to go down to Redruth and get the win there next week."
