TAUNTON Town are set to remain under the stewardship of Rob Dray and Matt Villis for the visit of Chesham United in the Evo-Stik Premier Division South on Saturday.

The duo oversaw a 7-1 FA Cup first qualifying round victory over Bemerton Heath as Town began life without Leigh Robinson and Michael Meaker, who departed for Truro City last week.

Town have not advertised the vacancy, and Peacocks chairman Kevin Sturmey told the County Gazette: “For the moment, nothing changes.

“We are looking to bring someone in, and we have had plenty of enquiries, but Rob and Matt are part of our long-term plans.

“Whoever does come in has to be the right character to take us forward - they have to fit in with what we are building.”

The management duo have this week added midfielder Matt Buse to the list of contracted players at the club.

The 21-year-old played a key role in the club's promotion last season after returning from Gosport Borough and has slotted in seamlessly to the higher division.

Interim manager Rob Dray told the club website: “It’s superb we have secured another great young talent that we believe will continue his development.

"Busey is a different kid since coming to us two years ago and is continuing to go through the gears. Matt and Ollie [Chamberlain] are two of the brightest talents in this league and it is terrific that the club has invested in these two players.”

Guide to the opposition

‘The Generals’ of Chesham United hail from Buckinghamshire, playing their home matches at the 5,000-capacity Meadow.

Last season they finished a creditable eighth in the Premier Division, but things have not gone so well for them so far this campaign.

Chesham opened with five straight losses, including 3-0 and 5-0 home defeats to Merthyr Town and Weymouth, respectively, before picking up their first point of the season against fellow strugglers Wimborne Town on September 1.

Ben Crilley equalised for the hosts in a 1-1 draw, the linesman adjudging his effort to have crossed the line despite Wimborne’s protests.

Last Saturday, Chesham, like Taunton, progressed into the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Their victory was not quite as serene as Taunton’s, United having to work hard to overcome Southern League Premier Central outfit Biggleswade Town.

Dejon Noel-Williams (son of ex-Watford man Gifton Noel Williams) opened the scoring after five minutes and Dave Pearce added a second 14 minutes from time.

Manager Jon Meakes has experimented with three and four-man defences in their league matches, and has added four new signings in the last month.

Forward Devonte Totesaut has come in after a spell in Spain and Gibraltar, ex-Anderlecht defender Richard Platt from Gloucester City, attacking midfielder Bradley Clayton from Brentford, as well as aforementioned striker Noel-Williams on a month loan from Oxford United.

Chesham currently sit bottom of the league table with one point from their opening six matches - Taunton are fourth.

Kick-off at the Viridor Stadium tomorrow is at 3pm.
