HANNAH Woodley, who hails from Taunton and plays at Enmore Park Golf Club, recently became the English Women’s County Champion of Champions.

Woodley won the title with a score of three-over par after 36 holes, with rounds of 71 and 72 at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire.

Woodley, who attended Castle School and Richard Huish College, setting up a golf academy at the latter, said: “I’m over the moon – it’s an incredible feeling to win a big one.”

Woodley has been Somerset county champion four times in the past five years and has played at women’s Champion of Champions since the event was started in 2016.

“It’s a really good tournament, an amazing addition to the calendar – and I’d think that even if I didn’t get through,” she said.

“It’s a great way to round off the season.”

TAYLOR Stote has shot a new course record of 62 at Enmore Park Golf Club.

The 19-year-old came in nine under the par 71 after carding seven birdies and an eagle on his round in the monthly medal.

Stote, who lives in Spaxton, has been playing golf since he was four years old and, even at that tender age, was encouraged by some of his school friends.

He said: “I have had a lot of good rounds at Enmore and, up until the 14th, it was just another good round for me but then I holed out for an eagle and I suddenly thought when I was on the 15th tee that I had equalled the course record.

“I just tried to keep it going and I got two more birdies to set a new record.”

As a result of his record-breaking round, Taylor’s handicap has been cut to +3.

THE Past Captain Mixed Greensomes took place last weekend at Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club.

Despite the difficult conditions and tricky pin placements, at the end of what was a most enjoyable day it was Jill Paul and John Godley, with 41 points, who were the winners.

Three pairs returned to the clubhouse with 40 but, after countback over the back nine holes, it was Margaret Nation and Mike Crump who were second, Pete Richards and Terina Parker were third while current Lady captain Jeannie Leader and David Powell were fourth. Two 2s were recorded, both at the eighth hole by Shaun Richards and Lennox Heath, and Bill Fletcher and Patsy Morgan.

Taunton and Pickeridge junior member Freddie Eglin made his debut appearance for the Somerset Under-12s team last weekend in the Five Counties event at Wheathill Golf Club which Dorset won.

Eglin, aged 10 and playing off a handicap of 20, has grown up through the junior ranks at the club and although the Somerset team lost overall, the T&P youngster gave a good account of himself.
