A FIELD of 132 competed in the Ladies’ Captain’s Charity Bowmaker at Taunton and Pickeridge last weekend, where just over £900 was raised for this year’s joint Charity of Parkinson’s UK.

Two teams headed the field with 92, but after countback it was Clive Hardy, Mark Coleman, Steve Johns and David Potter who edged into top spot just ahead of Roger Howard, Lyn and Nigel Gridley and Robert Stenhouse.

Countback was also needed to sort out the next places after two teams also scored 91, following which Craig Hamond, Mark Hammond, Arthur Sinclair and Adam Huxtable finished third.

The leading Ladies team was Ali McGowan, Jacky Lyn, Patsy Morgan and Jackie Pike with 81, and the leading Mixed team was Carol and Alan Keenan and Terina and Kevin Parker, who scored 86.

Fiona Lockyer won Nearest the Pin on the sixth, nearest the pin in two on the 18th and the Longest Drive on the 11th, Keith Welsher won Nearest the Pin on the 10th and Darryl Pengelly won the Longest Drive on the fifth.

On Tuesday the Ladies Section had two competitions, The Joan Elliott Trophy for all the divisional medal winners and a Stableford competition.

The Joan Elliott Trophy for the medal winners went to Heather Crump with nett 73, while Patsy Morgan was second with 79.

The Stableford competition was won by Shirley Portis on countback ahead of second placed Jan Olive after both scored 37 points, while Jenny Bevan was third with 36.

Janet Kingston scored the only two of the round.

The nine-hole Stableford was won by Mary Shepherd, with Jackie Denton-Cox second.

The Ladies Section held their Autumn Meeting, when the winner of the of the Club Cup in the Silver Division with a gross score of 84 was Caroline Cooper.

In the Silver Division Nett Comp, Heather Crump was the winner with 75 ahead of Ali McGowan on 77.

In the Bronze Division the winner of the Eileen Green Trophy with a gross of 99 was Patsy Morgan.

First in the net comp was Liz Reeve with 73, ahead of Bernie Hatcher on 77.

The Vets Stableford winner was Mary Guy with 31 points, while the winner of the nine-hole Stableford was Emilia O’Boyle with 15. Spot Prizes were won by Jackie Pike (2nd hole), Vi Gray (6th) and Mary Guy on the 16th - Guy had the only two on the day on the sixth hole.

AT Vivary Golf Club, the pairing of Dave Thomas and Graham Morris comfortably secured The John Wright Putter with a score of 44 points. 

The putter was named after the late seniors captain who fashioned it from an old table leg. 

He obtained permission from the Somerset Golfing Union to play with the club and it helped win him several trophies, though no winners of it have ever dared use it.

Phil Nicholls and Ken Tomlinson were second with 41 points and Bob Stout and Dave Hinton third with 40 and a better back nine than that of Barry Hembrow and Brian Verrier.

John Hughes celebrated his 86th birthday by winning the Seniors Autumn Medal with a magnificent 59 shots, three clear of Dave Thomas and Eddie Cullen, Thomas placing second.

The ninth and final round of the Eric Hood Eclectic Trophy was won by Steve Baker with a 64. 

Dave Thomas was second with 65 and Peter Bond third with 66 and a better back nine than Nigel Griffin. 

Nonetheless, the overall end of season winner of the Trophy was once again Pete Jeffery, who achieved a score of 57 from the nine rounds. 
Rod Hobson, playing in only seven rounds, took second place with 58.7, and Dave Thomas was third with 59.

The September Driver was also won by Jeffery, who came home with 39 points, two ahead of Bob Stock. 

In the seniors’ summer knockout final, John Troke beat Dai Lloyd (4&3).

RICHARD Beesley won the Men’s Friday Stableford competition at Oake Manor Golf Club, scoring 39 points.

Andrew Horton was second with 37 points, Alan Chapman third with 36 and Simon Molloy fourth with 34.

Martin Adams scored 35 points to win Division 1 of the Saturday Stableford competition; Adam Stoneman was second, also with 35 points, George Wagstaff third with 33 and Gary Wide fourth with 32. 

Wayne Milton won Division 2, scoring 35 points, Robert Cowburn was second with 33 points, David Matthews third, also with 33, and Roger Goodman fourth with 32.

Karen Mackenzie won the Ladies Tuesday Stableford by scoring 35 points; Mo Young came second, also with 35 points, Di Tiplady was third with 34 and Ginny Farnworth-Smith fourth with 33.

Jane Clist won the Ladies Tuesday Medal with nett 70, Kathy Salway was second with nett 73 and Sandra Lawrence third with nett 75.

Mike Eastmond won Division 1 of the Midweek Stableford, scoring 34 points.

The next 3 players all had 33 points, and on countback Jason Brock was second, Michael Bright third and Chris Smith fourth. 

There was better scoring in Division 2, won by Mark Smith with 39 points; Glyn Pearce was second, also on 39 points, Gary Jackson third with 36 and Robert Clark fourth with 35.
