TAUNTON Titans aim to avoid a repeat of last season’s slip-up at London Irish Wild Geese, as they look to continue their good start in National 2 South this campaign on Saturday (ko 3pm).

Last Saturday’s 23-22 win over Canterbury kept the Titans joint top of the table, alongside Redingensians Rams, whereas Wild Geese are rock bottom and without a point to their name.

Nonetheless, Taunton’s players and supporters will need little reminder of their visit to the Geese last November, when the hosts sped into a 21-0 lead inside 10 minutes and ultimately won 45-38.

That dealt a near-fatal blow to the Titans’ stuttering promotion challenge, so head coach Tony Yapp and his troops will be eager to show how far they have come since then.

Following the Canterbury match, Yapp told the County Gazette: “In the last couple of weeks we’ve had to dig in and work hard; we’re creating lots of opportunities and not being as clinical as we’d like.

“If we can start being more clinical, we can start putting teams away a bit more.

“Wild Geese are one of those teams who, as bad as they can be, always seem to be there or thereabouts whenever we play them.

“They have got the ability to play and throw the ball around, so we certainly won’t be taking it for granted - we’ll be going up there and putting every effort into making sure we get the right result.”

Elsewhere this weekend, third-placed Wellington travel to second bottom Saltash in Western Counties West.

The Cornish side gained promotion alongside the R&Bs last season and the two encounters were highly competitive and entertaining.

Wiveliscombe travel to Weston-super-Mare 2nds in Somerset Premier, while Wyvern are at Tor 2nds in Somerset 3 South.
