TAUNTON’S Pawel Augustynik sparred world title challenger Jamie Cox this month in preparation for his ring return on October 20, writes Marc Gatford.

The 23-year-old shared eight rounds with Cox, who is a former European and Commonwealth champion.

“Cox is a class operator,” said Augustynik.

“He’s been in there with the likes of George Groves and John Ryder – he fought Groves for his world title and was doing well until he got undone by a body shot.

“We had a competitive spar, but this was a step up in class for me. He showed me the levels I need to reach if I want to win titles.

“It was invaluable experience and will stand me in good stead as I progress. I’m seven fights in to my career and ready to step up the quality of opponents."

Augsutynik has impressed since turning professional last year, and was linked to Channel 5's eight-man elimination tournament, Ultimate Boxxer, before narrowly missing out.

Bristol boxing icon Chris Sanigar manages Augustynik and couldn't hide his disappointment at the decision not to include his fighter.

Sanigar said: “I’m very disappointed he wasn’t selected for Ultimate Boxxer.

"Sometimes it's about ticket sales rather than merit.

"I was very confident he’d do well in that tournament.

"Instead we'll have a couple more fights and then go after a Southern Area title."

Pawel Augustynik defends his unbeaten record on Saturday, October 20 at Bristol’s Ashton Gate.
