FA Trophy first qualifying round

Taunton Town 1, Weymouth 3

TAUNTON Town lost a cup tie for the second time in the space of four days as Weymouth emerged victorious in the FA Trophy clash at the Viridor Stadium on Saturday.

Brandon Goodship opened the scoring for the visitors on 12 minutes and the lead remained until the break despite Dan Sullivan firing just wide on the half-hour.

Weymouth went two up shortly after the interval when a free-kick wasn't dealt with and Stephane Zubar fired home from close range.

Lloyd Irish made a fine double save to prevent the Terras adding a third, and Taunton then halved the deficit when captain Matt Wright headed home Ryan Brett's free-kick.

Any thoughts of a comeback were dampened by Josh Wakefield, who tapped home Abdulai Baggie's ball across with 14 minutes to play to seal his side's progress.

Taunton head of football Rob Dray told the club website: "Keeping our levels was always going to be difficult today but at the same time my expectations are high for these boys.

"Weymouth are without doubt a National League side in waiting and today showed why they are top of our division.

"Seven games in 21 days showed in our performance today but the boys have been superb in that period with three games against National League South sides plus Weymouth today.

"We still have work to do so we will regroup ready to go again next Saturday.”

The Peacocks visit Swindon Supermarine on Saturday.
