AS the curtain fell on the 2018 golf season, last Thursday saw Enmore host their annual match against the County Cricketers Golf Society and once again, it was a glorious Autumn day on the parkland course.

The home side had the best of the early results but, just when it looked like the cricketers were facing a heavy defeat, Somerset captain Tom Abell and partner Jason Kerr, with former county favourites Graham Rose and Mike Burns, spared the visitors’ blushes and Enmore ran out 4-3 winners.

Enmore Park maintained their vice-like grip on the Rob Ford Cup, winning the Avalon Seniors title for the third year running thanks to an emphatic 4½-½ victory against Worlebury.

The competition runs throughout the season and is contested by 12 of Somerset’s clubs. With Long Sutton hosting the final, Neil Whisler & Martyn Clapp led the way, winning 5&4 against Steve Taylor & Steve Rowlands.

This was quickly followed by Paddy Maclennan & Rob Fear having the same margin in their game against Robbie McMillen & Stuart Lock. Team captain Mike Rossiter & Martyn Westbury enjoyed a comfortable 3&2 victory against Keri Allchurch & John Ratajczak, while Phil Hodge & Wayne Hawley closed out a win on the 15th green against Dave Treleaven & Danny O’Connor.

In the remaining game, Keith Miller & Jeff Saunders were evenly matched with Paul McAdams & Tony Westren and an honourable half was agreed.

ON Saturday, Taunton & Pickeridge held their Hallowe’en 4 Ball Better Ball Stableford, where the greens were an amazing 11 on the stimp and running really smooth.

At the end of the day, first place went to Jon Greenslade and Malcolm Lawrence with 44 points. However, three pairs returned with 42 points, so countback had to be used to separate them at the end of which it was Martin Sawyer and Glenn Brooks second, Kelvin Oxley and Steve Coomber third and Steve Shirley and Jim Lindsay fourth.

On Tuesday, the Ladies’ Section played a Hallowe’en Stableford - the scoring system was the traditional Stableford points with Tricks (penalty points) or Treats (bonus points) thrown in for good measure!

At the end of the round the winner of the Silver Division was Caroline Cooper with 53, one ahead of second-placed Jenny Scobie, while Heather Crump was third with 44.

In the Bronze Division, Marlene Ewens with 46 claimed the spoils, Janet Kingston was second with 45. Two players returned with 44 but following countback it was Anna Rees who was third just ahead of Pat Follett.

Twos were recorded by Jenny Scobie and Marion Beranek.

The 9-Hole Hallowe’en Stableford was won by Anne Thomas.
