TAUNTON football talent Emily Syme has two goals in her last three games for Yeovil Town Ladies, and Lady Glovers boss Lee Burch believes she has a “great future” in the game.

Syme, 18, followed up her first Women’s Super League goal against Birmingham with an outstanding individual effort in the 4-1 Continental Cup defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last Wednesday.

The midfielder picked the ball up just outside her own penalty area, stormed up the pitch and fired into the corner from the edge of the box.

As Yeovil enter the winter break – their next match is at home to Liverpool on January 13 – Syme can reflect on a positive start in the professional game.

Having previously shone for Bishops Lydeard Ladies and Richard Huish College, she is well thought of in the England set-up, having worked her way through the age groups to Under-19 level, and those are sentiments shared by her club manager Burch.

“Symo’s been brilliant,” he said.

“She’s come in as someone I didn’t know too much about; I’d heard a few things, but last year she took a step back to focus on her studies, which shows her maturity.

“I very quickly saw what she was all about, and she started the season for us, played the Continental Cup games and against Reading, but unfortunately she got injured and was out for a long period.

“Sometimes when a player is out for a while, you forget how good they are until they come back in, and since she’s been back, and we’ve steadily re-introduced her, she’s looked brilliant – she has a great future ahead of her.

“She’s got a great personality within the group, the girls all like her, she’s funny, and she’s also very switched-on.

“Working with her and her England manager, they’re really excited about her future too.”

Burch believes that her technique and intelligence on the ball make her a real asset for club and country.

He added: “She’s a real technical player, and her passing stats within our team are in the top three; for such a young player that’s great.

“She keeps possession of the ball well, and although she’s not that fast at dribbling, she keeps it close and under control.

“You talk about Xavi and Iniesta type players... I don’t want to put her in that bracket, but that’s the type of player she is.

“She gets on the ball, she moves it, and she gets assists and goals.

“Her passing is her strength, and the more games we get from her, the better we’re going to be.”
