FORMER Somerset director of cricket Matt Maynard is part of an illustrious sporting list to receive recognition in the New Year Honours.
Lancashire-born Maynard, who departed Somerset CCC in September 2017, has been awarded an MBE for services to charity and sport.
He spent most of his career at Glamorgan, and played in four Tests for England, going on to take the role of assistant coach with England and then Somerset director of cricket for three seasons from 2014.
The Tom Maynard Trust was set up in the summer of 2012 following Matt's son Tom’s death, offering grants to young sportspeople, education and awareness, and also a Tom Maynard Academy in Spain.
Also receiving honours are ex-England cricket captain and four-time Ashes winner Alastair Cook and former England rugby skipper Bill Beaumont (both knighthoods), plus England football manager Gareth Southgate (OBE) and captain Harry Kane (MB), as well as Tour de France champion cyclist Geraint Thomas (OBE) and Portishead-based former footballer Leroy Rosenior (MBE).
