JACK Turner has been crowned the winner of a prestigious international athletics competition.

The Wellington School Sixth Former competed at the International Under-20s Indoor Combined Events in Cardiff and came out as the overall winner.

This is a particularly impressive triumph for Turner, as he is only 17 and was competing alongside 20-year-olds.

He competed in the Heptathlon (seven events over two days) and achieved lifetime bests in 60m sprint (7.17s), long jump (7.06m), shot (12.58m), 60m hurdles (8.05s), pole vault (4.15m) and an equal PB in the final event, the 1000m.

Turner's score of 5,430 points, another lifetime best, gave him his first GB gold medal, ahead of athletes from Spain, France, Poland and the Czech Republic.

He is now ranked the world number three indoor multi-eventer and fourth in the UK all-time list.

As a Team GB (comprising seniors and Under-20s men and women) member, Turner also won team gold at the event.
