TAUNTON Town head of football Rob Dray was pleased with yesterday's victory over Farnborough, but felt his team should have won by more.

The Peacocks claimed a 2-1 win at the Viridor Stadium, with Shane White and Andrew Neal scoring to secure the three points.

The result keeps Taunton five points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division South standings – with Salisbury, Weymouth and Metropolitan Police all winning as well – ahead of this Wednesday's home match with Swindon Supermarine (ko 7.45pm).

Dray said: "It's just important to keep ticking off the games; we're down to 11 now, so it becomes less chance for other teams to catch us.

"But it's just about the next game, then the next game, and the next game.

"We've got some tough games, probably the toughest run-in [of the title contenders] I'd say.

"But the boys were fantastic today – it could have been 4-1 or 5-1 quite easily, and I don't think 2-1 is a fair reflection.

"We played some nice stuff and it's a great win, with a great save from Lloyd [Irish], and we go again on Wednesday."

The Peacocks' preparations were far from ideal, with Ben Adelsbury a late dropout with injury, but his replacement Pierce Mitchell performed well at right-back.

"We had a bit of disruption to our routine before the start of the game, with Ben pulling out and a couple of delays, so I don't think we started that well," said Dray.

"But then we got into our stride; Pierce [Mitchell] came in and I thought he was superb.

"[Farnborough] came down here full of confidence, having not lost in 10, and you have to take your hat off to them, they're a good team.

"I think we're really going to beat someone soon; we hit the woodwork three times today, and on another day they all go in.

"We looked good going forward and solid at the back, though we're disappointed to concede at the end because we want to keep clean sheets.

"But at the end of the day it's three points and we move onto the next one."

White proved an influential presence at both ends, scoring the opening goal, and standing firm in the centre and on the left of the Peacocks' backline.

Dray added: "[White and Ed Palmer] were very solid today. We can move those boys around [between positions] and they know what to do.

"We've been 3-5-2 all season and the last three games we've gone 4-3-3.

"I want to get our front six out, and you have to make a sacrifice somewhere, but you can see why we want to get that front three out and it's important that we do.

"If I tell the players 'We're playing 4-3-3 today', they just say 'alright' and do it – they're good like that.

"I'm really pleased with Rocky [Neal] as well – he's worked really hard and not scored in the last two or three weeks, for someone so prolific.

"It's a great penalty, shows some real minerals for me, to put it away like he did."

Tempers became somewhat frayed in the second half, both sides with a couple of penalty shouts, and some pushing and shoving in front of the home dugout.

Dray said: ""It was difficult at times, and I don't think the officials really helped the situation or managed it properly.

"But you've just got to keep your discipline and keep 11 on the pitch.

"[Farnborough] are obviously upset because we've taken then 10-game unbeaten run off them, but when you sit back and look at what we did to them, we beat them properly today."

Attention now switches to Swindon Supermarine – who are 11th in the table after a 2-0 win over Dorchester Town – on Wednesday.

Dray added: "I'd say Ben [Adelsbury] would be touch and go for Wednesday – it might be a bit too soon for him to come back in.

"Otherwise it's the same squad, and we'll keep doing what we're doing.

"We're used to being in this position now, and we can kick on from here.

"The players have the belief, they don't want to let anyone take their home record from them.

"We were a bit patchy [at the start of 2019] and let in a few soft goals, but we'll keep going."
