THE ever-increasing popularity of Taunton Deane Water Polo has meant that the ladies team has enough players to enter a league for the first time this season.

Their first game was away to Devonport and, unfortunately, a few key players were unavailable and despite their best efforts it resulted in a 22-3 defeat against experienced opposition.

For some much-needed match practice, a friendly game was organised against Marjon University, from Plymouth.

With an almost full squad available, and the return of superstar goalkeeper Gracie Allan, the ladies were full of confidence.

They got off to a flying start with four goals in the first quarter, with a hat-trick for captain Emi Williams and Hannah Taylor also scoring.

The flowing play continued into the second quarter, with goals coming from Williams again, Sophie Richards and Tash Broad.

Marjon managed to sneak a goal back, so the score at half-time was 7-1 to Taunton.

Some inspired substitutions in the third quarter by coach Milo Barrett meant the goals continued to mount up for Taunton.

Getting on to the scoresheet were Richards, Amelia Jones (3), Paige Kearns (2) and Taylor (2).

Marjon clawed a few back and the score going into the final quarter was 15-4 to Taunton.

An excellent team performance was rounded off in the final quarter with more Taunton players adding to the total: Keziah Gill-Stevens (2), Nyah Tomlinson, Tess Dean, Taylor (2), Broad and Mia Cioma.

The final score was 23-5, a real confidence boost ahead of the next league game on Sunday, April 28 (7pm), at home to Exeter.
