Chesham United 0, Taunton Town 1

TAUNTON Town kept the pressure on at the top of the table with a 1-0 victory away to Chesham United on Saturday.

The Taunton scorers in the midweek victory over Frome Town combined for the only goal of the game this time around, Lewis Hall assisting Matt Wright's header - his second strike in two games after a three-month drought.

This was an impressive three points for the visitors, given that Chesham had only lost one other league match since December 22, and it gives Rob Dray's side a third successive win.

There was no Shane Krac - who signed for the Peacocks this week - in the visitors' squad, but Ben Adelsbury was named on the bench following a rib injury.

The opening 20 minutes of the match at The Meadow was a quiet affair, with little goalmouth action, but then chances started to come.

Josh Nelmes headed wide from a Ryan Brett free-kick, Andrew Neal was denied by home goalkeeper Ben Goode, and at the other end Lloyd Irish was called into action to block an effort from Jeanmal Prosper.

The breakthrough came a minute before half-time, as left-back Hall whipped in a fine cross for captain Wright to head in.

That gave the Peacocks a 1-0 lead at the break, but they were almost pegged back five minutes into the second half as Chesham skipper Adam Martin struck the woodwork.

Irish then saved a free-kick from Luke Heneghan, but the away side managed to weather the storm and regain a foothold in the match.

Neal and Sullivan combined nicely, only for the latter to see his shot saved by Goode, but in the end one goal proved to be enough.

Taunton Town: Lloyd Irish, Pierce Mitchell, Lewis Hall, Shane White, Josh Nelmes, Matt Buse, Ollie Chamberlain, Ryan Brett, Matt Wright (c), Dan Sullivan (Craig Veal 88), Andrew Neal (Ben Adelsbury 90+2).
Subs not used: Noah Coppin, Matt Villis.
Attendance: 335

The result keeps Taunton two points behind league leaders Weymouth, who won 3-0 at Hartley Wintney.

There were also wins for third and fourth-placed sides Metropolitan Police and Salisbury, 2-0 over Merthyr Town and 7-1 against Staines Town, respectively.

Next Saturday sees Taunton host Met Police for a massive fixture at the Viridor Stadium (ko 3pm); Met Police are two points behind the Peacocks with a game in hand, which is away to Weymouth this coming Tuesday.
