TAUNTON Town head of football Rob Dray hailed the spirit of his side in coming back from 2-0 down to beat Merthyr Town 3-2 on Easter Monday.

Ian Traylor and Jamie Veale put the visitors two up at the Viridor Stadium, but goals from Andrew Neal, Dan Sullivan and Matt Buse secured three points for the Peacocks.

Dray said afterwards: "I'm very proud of the boys today, to come from two down when we had totally dominated the game, [conceding] two breakaway goals when we had possession in their half.

"To come back from that... it's something you just can't buy.

"[At 2-0 down] I thought I could have done with about six subs!

"But you've got to hold your nerve and keep calm.

"We were doing well in the game, so we just had to keep a level head and keep focused.

"We knew the subs we were going to make, we'd discussed what to do if we went a goal down, so it was all in the plan.

"I know we'll always make good chances here at home, so as soon as we got one I had a little feeling there was something about us.

"We also had a great crowd today, very noisy, and they sucked the ball in for the third goal."

The result means that Taunton are just one point behind league leaders Weymouth going into the last day of the season.

Should the Terras fail to beat Farnborough at home on Saturday, victory for the Peacocks away to Basingstoke Town will hand them the title and automatic promotion.

Taunton will finish second at the very least, due to third-placed Salisbury drawing 0-0 at Frome Town on Monday, which means home advantage should they end up in the play-offs.

Dray added: "To break Weymouth's lead from eight points to one over the last couple of weeks, and take it to the last game, it's an unbelievable effort from everybody in the first year of us being in this division.

"[To secure second] is a massive achievement, and I think in time people will realise how good it's been.

"It's one of those situations where you get a little bit carried away with yourself and think 'OK so we didn't quite get first'.

"But to be second in our first year is a great, great achievement – it's a tough division, and we saw today there's some good players; Merthyr are a well-established team in this division."

The Peacocks go into the Basingstoke match with momentum, having beaten Kings Langley, Hendon and Merthyr in the last 10 days.

"[Momentum] is massive, the changing room is absolutely banging," said Dray.

"The boys are on fire at the moment, and we've had a great weekend.

"To be fair the scorelines don't really reflect the dominance that we've had in [the last two] games.

"We played some really nice stuff up at Hendon, and to come from behind today, what a great way to end Easter."
