SOMERSET Women are all set for the start of their 2019 campaign, with a Bank Holiday double-header.

Somerset are playing in Division 2 of the Royal London Women’s One-Day Championship and T20 competitions this summer, and begin their 50-over campaign against Wales at Taunton Vale on Sunday (11am).

That is followed on Bank Holiday Monday by the visit of Durham in a match that is part of Women’s County Cricket Day, a new initiative aimed at encouraging cricket fans to support their county women’s team.

Somerset captain Sophie Luff said: “I think it is a great initiative and it has got people talking about women’s county cricket, which is brilliant.”

Luff can no longer call on the services of World Cup winner Anya Shrubsole, who has signed for Berkshire, but Somerset have signed wicketkeeper-batsman Nat Wraith from Gloucestershire.

“We are a young team – our oldest player will be 26 – but that opens up opportunities for people to impress,” Luff said.
