TAUNTON Titans head coach Tony Yapp believes it has been a good season for the club as a whole, despite his side finishing shy of the promotion places in National 2 South.

A try bonus point picked up in last Saturday's 66-31 loss at Worthing Raiders took the Titans onto 100 points for the season in National 2 South.

They finished 20 points adrift of the teams in third and fourth, Tonbridge Juddians and Henley Hawks, as Rams won the league with 139 points (and only two defeats all season), with Canterbury in second.

Reflecting on the season, Yapp said: “I look at key moments, some of which have gone for us and some against us.

“We have had injuries at bad times, particularly in the loss of Toots [Ratu Vakalutukali] and Jarrard Hayler after Christmas.”

This season marks the latest in a series of consistent finishes for Taunton, who still can’t quite bridge the gap between themselves and the top two.

“It is a conversation I have had a lot,” Yapp said.

“People often say ‘it’s about time Taunton went up’, but you have to look at the players we have helped progress.

“There are 27 players who have played in our tenure who are now at a higher level – if we had kept those players together, we would have gone up, but it is difficult to stand in people’s way when they get opportunities.

“There is no doubting the ability in the players in our squad now.

"We need to add three or four to strengthen the depth, and I think we have the quality to get to the next level.

“It is also important to look at the bigger picture – the rugby club is not just the Titans.

“The Warriors have won the Somerset Cup, the Wanderers won their league and the Colts have reached finals at various age groups.

“Overall, I think it has been a good season for the club as a whole.”

Yapp, forwards coach Chris Brown and team manager Keith Brooking are set to remain in position next season, while the majority of the squad have also agreed to stay.
