FORMER Taunton Cricket Club overseas pro Marcus Harris has been selected in Australia's squad for the upcoming Ashes series.

Harris, a 27-year-old top order batsman, has had two stints at Gipsy Lane - in 2010 and 2015.

He made his Test debut against India in December and will be looking to add to his six caps.

Harris, who also coached at Taunton School in his time in England, currently has 327 Test runs from 11 innings with a top score of 79.

If selected in Australia's Test XI, Harris could yet be in for a WEPL reunion against Jack Leach.

Reflecting on his stint in Taunton before his Australia debut, Taunton CC stalwart Jon Kerslake said: "In 2015, there were times when it looked as if he would never get out.

"Against Potterne, he opened the batting with Tom Abell and the pair of them were magnificent. They dispatched the bowlers to all parts.

"He was also very active in coaching the youngsters at the club and really showed the value of a good overseas player.

"It would be really nice to see them [Harris and Leach] come up against each other in the summer.

"It's great for players locally to see what some of these players have gone on to achieve."

Cameron Bancroft, who was due to sign for Somerset last season but saw his contract cancelled after his part in the ball tampering saga, has also been named in the squad alongside the other 'sandpaper-gate' protagonists Steve Smith and David Warner.

Australia Ashes squad: Tim Paine (capt), Cameron Bancroft, Patrick Cummins, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Michael Neser, James Pattinson, Peter Siddle, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner.
