WIVELISCOMBE Cricket Club hosted the latest women’s softball festival, organised by the Somerset Cricket Board, on Sunday.

Four teams took part in the event at the Recreation Ground – North Newton, Staplegrove, Taunton St Andrew’s and hosts Wiveliscombe.

Following a slight rain delay, each of the four teams played each other once over the afternoon; the games had an eight a-side pairs format, with each pair batting two overs and everyone bowling one over.

As the focus of the day was to ‘Get the Game On’, there was no overall winner, but awards were presented for standout performances.

The ‘ball of the day’ award went to Lizzie Nash from Wiveliscombe, ‘shot of the day’ to Beth Sellick (North Newton) and ‘catch of the day’ to Kiri Pursey (Staplegrove).

Finally, North Newton were recognised as ‘team of the day’, having played their first ever cricket matches at the event.

The final softball festival of the summer takes place next Wednesday, August 28 (1.30pm start), at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton.
