Yate Town 4, Taunton Town 1

YATE Town completed the league double over Taunton Town with a 4-1 win on Saturday, inflicting a fourth defeat in five games on the visitors.

Having shocked the Peacocks 4-0 in the reverse fixture, Yate bagged another four goals on home turf, thanks to strikes from Nicholas Peare, Sam Bell (2) and Joseph Low.

The visitors handed starts to loan signings Harry Kite and Ryley Towler, as well as Jamie Short after his hat-trick in midweek, but they were under the cosh from the start.

Low’s cross-cum-shot had already clipped the bar when Peare put his side ahead on 10 minutes, slotting the ball home after Aysa Corrick’s pass.

Sam Kamara’s effort went wide via the outside of the post as Yate continued to attack, and they doubled their lead in the 18th minute - Bristol City loanee Bell netting via the upright.

That advantage was halved just four minutes later, though, as Ryan Brett scored directly from a corner.

Matt Wright came close to an equaliser soon after, volleying just wide, but it was Taunton’s Lloyd Irish who was the busiest of the goalkeepers.

After a fingertip save denied Luke Spokes scoring from a free-kick, he then diverted another home effort over the top.

It remained 2-1 at half-time, although Shane White was unlucky not to score from another Brett corner, as his header was cleared off the line.

The Peacocks’ task became that much harder just seven minutes into the second half, Yate again getting off to a fast start and scoring their third through an opportunistic strike from Low, sending a long-range volley over Irish from the halfway line.

The away side introduced Owen Windsor and Lewis Hall off the bench, but could not force a way back into the game - Bell and Andrew Neal drawing saves from the respective keepers.

Another Brett corner was cleared off the line late on, but after Peare’s long-range free-kick had struck the bar at the other end, Yate sealed their win in stoppage time.

Taunton were their own worst enemy, ceding possession and allowing Bell to beat Irish for his second of the match.

Taunton Town: Lloyd Irish, Jamie Short, Shane White, Ben Adelsbury, Ryley Towler, Jamie Price (Owen Windsor 53), Ollie Chamberlain (Lewis Hall 67), Ryan Brett, Matt Wright (c), Harry Kite, Andrew Neal. Subs not used: Nick Grimes, Owen Irish, Michael Meaker. Attendance: 263

Having lost 6-3 at Paulton Rovers (with what was, admittedly, a much-changed side) in the Challenge Cup on Tuesday, that’s 10 goals conceded in the Peacocks’ last two games.

They remain fifth in the Premier South table despite the defeat, and their next match sees them host Wimborne Town on Saturday, January 22 (3pm).
