FRESH from helping New Zealand defeat India in the World Test Championship final this week, Devon Conway is in line to make his Somerset bow in tonight's Vitality Blast fixture against Hampshire Hawks (6.30pm).

Conway top scored with 54 in New Zealand's first innings, and then added 19 to help secure an eight-wicket victory.

Now he turns his attention to T20 cricket, with Somerset looking to build on Wednesday's impressive win away to Surrey.

Tom Abell (hamstring) and Roelof van der Merwe (side strain) remain on the sidelines, but James Hildreth and Jack Leach certainly stepped up in their absence, with fine performances at the Kia Oval.

Somerset return to Taunton for tonight's match, with Hampshire visiting the Cooper Associates County Ground off the back of one win and three defeats so far in this year's Blast.

The Somerset squad is as follows:

Lewis Gregory (c), Tom Banton, George Bartlett, Eddie Byrom, Devon Conway, Josh Davey, Marchant de Lange, Lewis Goldsworthy, Ben Green, James Hildreth, Tom Lammonby, Jack Leach, Craig Overton, Will Smeed, Max Waller.

T20 skipper Gregory has already had a taste of playing alongside Conway, having been in the same Somerset 2nd XI side when they were teenagers.

“I know him pretty well,” Gregory told the County Gazette.

“He’s a nice guy and has been scoring a lot of runs.

“It’ll be his job to score runs for us, but also to pass on his knowhow.

“We still have an inexperienced squad in the T20 format, so hopefully he can bring that to us.

“I’m really excited to have him on board.”

FOUR Somerset cricketers went head-to-head in a ‘Sportsman Challenge’ at the Cooper Associates County Ground this week.

As part of the partnership between Somerset County Cricket Club and Trade Nation, the four players - Tom Banton, Lewis Gregory, Craig Overton and Max Waller - competed against one another in four different challenges on Monday morning.

Trade Nation pledged £500 to the winning player’s chosen charity, and the chance to win a round of golf or Silverstone track day.

Banton’s charity of choice was Love Musgrove, while Gregory opted to support St Luke’s Hospice, Overton chose Children’s Hospice South West and Waller picked the Professional Cricketers’ Trust.

The four challenges were a throwing challenge, hit the pin, a football challenge and a darts challenge, with the player with the most points after four challenges being crowned Somerset’s ultimate sportsman.

The full Sportsman Challenge is to be released in the coming weeks, as part of Trade Nation’s T20 partnership with the club.

The partnership has raised almost £3,000 across Somerset’s first three T20 home games, with Cots for Tots, Children’s Hospice South West and WWF to benefit.
