Taunton Town 2-1 Yate Town

TAUNTON Town fans were singing: "We're going to win the league" after their side won 2-1 tonight at home against Yate Town.

The Cygnet Health Care Stadium welcomed 1,068 people on a Tuesday night for this all important fixture and they were treated to the Peacocks opening up a three point gap at the top of the table.

After the match, manager Rob Dray said he is starting to get a little excited now.

"We dominated in large parts of that game but to be fair to them they made it difficult in the last 15 minutes or so.

"It is all starting to get a little bit exciting now but there is still two games to go, tough games as well, so we have to switch our focus to those."

Taunton started this game on the front foot, and all the early action came their way.

Gethyn Hill, Toby Holmes and Zach Smith all created some chances for themselves early on but the scoreline remained unchanged.

Then in the 31st minute, Lloyd James calmed himself and delivered a perfect cross to the back post where Joe Guest volleyed home first time for his first goal of the season. Very timely.

In the second half, the Peacocks kept the momentum and in the 50th minute Gethyn Hill beat his man to cut the ball back to Ross Staley and he found the back of the net.

At 2-0 it looked as though it would be smooth sailing for Taunton.

Yate had other plans; James Harding pulled a goal back for his side after some poor defending from Taunton.

The away side kept the pressure on but Taunton were let off when Liam Angel was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in under two minutes.

The clock wound down, albeit slowly, and Taunton held on for the win.

Up next, Taunton travel to face local rivals Tiverton Town on Easter Monday, April 18. Kick off is 3pm.

If results go their way in the weekend fixtures, a win here could see Taunton with the league.
