Taunton Town 1-0 Cheshunt FC

TAUNTON Town had to fight hard in this National League South fixture but they were deserved winners come the end of play.

In their first game back in action since the FA Cup defeat, the Peacocks looked fresh and were once again unbeatable at home.

Nat Jarvis scored the winning goal in the 44th minute in stylish fashion but the rest of the performance from the team was more workmanlike.

For the entire first period all the action came through Taunton's attack and the half deserved more goals. Cheshunt's keeper made some good saves to keep his side in it.

Zach Smith and Ollie Chamberlain were providing good outlets going forward on the wings and the pair created a number of chances in behind for Nick McCootie and Nat Jarvis up front.

However midway through the half Chamberlain picked up a groin injury and was replaced by Joe Budd.

The goal came late in the half when Lee Lucas and Lloyd James played a slick one-two before the ball was played out to Smith who lobbed it over the keeper and on a plate for Jarvis to head home.

In the second period Cheshunt came out firing and looked the more likely to score for about a 15 minute period.

It was scrappy from here on out but credit to the defence of Taunton who limited the away team's chances to next to none.

In particular Dan Ball made a shot-stopping challenge in the box to the amazement of the visiting supporters.

After using all three of their substitutes, Cheshunt were caught out after their keeper had to come off injured in the final stages of the match.

They had to use one of the midfield players in goal and play the final few minutes with 10 men on the pitch.

By this stage, Taunton shut up shop and made sure there would be no late surprises and there wasn't.

The final whistle sounded after 7 minutes of extra time and the Peacocks earned another three points at home.

Up next, Taunton are away against Yeovil Town in the Somerset Cup on Tuesday night.
