Wellington 1st XV 35 Sherborne 1st XV 10

There were difficult playing conditions for both teams to contend with for this encounter but to their credit, both teams endeavoured to entertain.

It was soft underfoot following the heavy rain during week but the pitch held up very well - huge credit to the grounds team.

Playing away from the clubhouse and with the howling wind in their favour in the 1st half, The Chiefs started brightly and took an early lead via a penalty from Alex Davey. More pressure followed as Sherborne found it difficult to get out of their own half, and winger Ash Harney, on his return after the birth of his second child, crossed out wide for an unconverted try.

Captain Danny Lee exploited a defensive frailty powering over for a try near the posts which was converted by Davey following a well orchestrated attack. Sherborne had their best period of half after this score which stretched The Chiefs' defence but Sherborne were not to be denied and crossed for an unconverted try to reduce the arrears.

Stung by this, The Chiefs went straight back on the attack and soon had an attacking 5m scrum, Chris Kitto exploited the dominant scrum to score The Chiefs' third try, which went unconverted, of the match. In the dying seconds of the half, The Chiefs continued to press and extended their lead with the final kick of the half via another penalty by Davey - 23-5 at halftime.

Despite having an handsome halftime lead if was obvious considering the playing conditions that The Chiefs needed further scores to put the game beyond any doubt. The first twenty minutes of the second half saw The Chiefs defy the conditions, dominating territory and possession.

During this period Will Brewer crossed for unconverted try following an outrageous dummy and this was soon followed by an outstanding individual try from George Hodgson from 50m out which was converted by Davey. Whether it was Sherborne doubling their efforts or The Chiefs relaxing too much, the second 20 minutes of the half was a different affair, with numerous penalties conceded and a yellow card, which saw The Chiefs penned in their own half as Sherborne’s confidence grew.

An unconverted try by the visitors towards the end of the half was deserved - with full time score being 35-10 to The Chiefs.

This was a much deserved and welcome victory for The Chiefs in difficult conditions. Debutant Charle Snow had a fine game at outside half but the whole squad again can be pleased with their contributions for a fine team victory.

Squad: Richards, Redwood, Price, Hancock, Machin, Phillips, Keyte, Howe, Kitto, Brewer, Snow, Harney, Lee(cpt), Hodgson, Williams, Venn, Bellamy.

Next week, The Chiefs welcome Teignmouth to The Athletic Ground in what will be a competitive encounter. When the two sides met in September The Chiefs ran out winners in a high scoring game.

The 2nd XV will look to get back to playing  travelling over the hill to take on Chard - both kick-offs scheduled to be 2.30pm.
