SOMERSET were handed just their second defeat in this seasons Vitality Blast competition at home to Surrey.

The visitors were helped by a strong bowling effort from Sam Curran and an impressive 31-run over from Chris Jordan.

Before the match, players and staff from both sides stood with Staplegrove CC junior cricketers for a minute applause to honour the life of Barnaby Webber.

Somerset won the toss and elected to field, as opening Surrey batsman, Will Jacks played a mix of top-quality shots to start well.

After five overs, Surrey were 34 for nought and in honesty a bit off the pace on a pitch that looked like 180 plus would be a good score.

The overs following saw an increase in the run rate but as the visitors looked to move forward, Tom Abell caught Evans on the boundary off a Ben Green delivery.

Former Somerset player Jamie Overton came to the crease with Surrey at 104 for 2, and he very quickly hit two sixes off Roelof van der Merwe.

In the same over though Matt Henry caught a very high shot from Jacks who was dismissed on 60 runs.

With five overs remaining, the visitors were 130 for four and needing a late surge. Jamie Overton kicked off the final stint with a huge six into the Somerset Stand.

Chris Jordan smashed 31 runs off Henry in the 19th over to put Surrey back in with a good score, however with the first ball in the final over Abell caught Sunil Narine to give Green another wicket.

Gus Atkinson was next to fall, another catch in the deep from Dickson as Surrey finished the innings on 193 for 9 and Green finished on 4 wickets for 33 runs and takes his Blast total to 20 for the season.

Somerset required 9.8 runs an over in reply to win the match and Tom Banton got to work hitting two sixes in the first over.

Smeed smashed two fours before he was dismissed for 8 caught by Lawes off a Sam Curran delivery in the second over.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore was able to pick up nine runs before he was dismissed by a fine catch from Gus Atkinson at mid on to give Curran a second wicket.

After five overs Somerset sat at 42 for 2 with Tom Abell and Banton at the crease. They required 154 runs to win at this stage.

Abell and Banton worked together to build the total to 99 for 2 after 10 overs however in the first ball of the eleventh Abell was out caught by Smith off Atkinson.

Banton reached his 50 in the 12th over and looked in good nick to carry on for a top score however a shorter ball from Curran teased him into a poor shot.

From here, wickets fell cheaply with Dickson (8), Gregory (1), Green (18), van der Merwe (3), Overton (1) and

In the end, the better side had earned the win at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
