Taunton Town's Steve Murray joins Wells City as manager

Murray first joined Taunton in 2013 as a player, making 71 appearances and scoring 31 goals and in May 2024, he joined manager Richard Luffman as the new management team at the Cygnet Health Care Stadium.

In a statement posted on the club’s social media, Taunton Town said: “Since then, he has played a huge role in helping the club stabilise on its Southern League return, leaving the team in a strong position to push on for the rest of the season at the upper reaches of the table.

“He will be sorely missed by everyone at The Peacocks, but we wish him nothing but success in this exciting new chapter.”

Luffman added: “First off, I’m delighted for Steve. He’s one of my best mates and when he first approached me about this opportunity, we both felt he should go for it. He’s a good man, a loyal friend, and I’ll miss him. But for his own non-league career, this is the step he wanted to take, so I wish him well and I’ve no doubt he’ll be very successful.”

Speaking to the club, Steve said: “To the Peacock family, it has been an honour to be back involved with your special club since Luffers took over.

“An opportunity to become a manager has come to light, one that I am excited about, but believe me, it is a tough decision to leave this group.

“I am proud of the work that has been done and have full belief that Luffers will go on to deliver the success you deserve. I will not be a stranger.”

Speaking to Wells City club media, he added: “There’s something about Wells City that always draws me back. I’ll never forget how welcoming everyone was when I signed for the club 17 years ago.

“My hope is to build something that our players can look back at in years to come – the fundamentals are hard work and spirit.

“I’m prepared to do what it take to get things going here.”

His first act as manager of Wells City has been to sign former Taunton Town midfielder Charlie Dashfield.
