Southern League Premier South: Taunton Town 0-2 Chertsey Town

Taunton Town’s seven-match unbeaten run at home, which stretched back to April, has been ended after a defeat to Chertsey Town.

The Peacocks were back in Southern League action this week for the first time 18 days as they welcomed the Curfews to the Cygnet Health Care Stadium on Saturday (October 11).

It was the visitors who enjoyed the occasion though aa they came away with a 2-0 win. The first away side to win at Taunton since Walton & Hersham did it in March.

Manager Richard Luffman made five changes from the side that went out of the FA Trophy to AFC Portchester a week earlier as Niall Thompson and Ben Seymour made their league returns from injury and Jamie Richards made his league debut. Austen Booth and Josh Owers also came into the starting XI.

Nat Williams, Jack Rice, Owen brain, Jacob Hodgson and Kalvin Lumbombo-Kalala all dropped out.

Despite Taunton looking confident in the early stages, the first sight of goal went to the visitors as a free kick was struck towards Frankie Phillips’ near post but only found the side netting.

The Peacocks’ first look at goal came on 16 minutes when Josh Owers tried to lift the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper, but it only went over the bar.

The visitors did take the lead on 22 minutes after Daniel Berry was adjudged to have been fouled inside the box by Austen Booth. Luke Robertson converted from the spot, beating the stretching dive from Phillips low to his right-hand corner.

Taunton had a shot immediately after the goal as Alfie Moulden laid it off to Owers around 25 yards out, but the effort went over the bar.

The home side pushed for an equaliser before half time with Ben Seymour forcing a good save and Austen Booth having the ball in the net only to find the referee had blew his whistle for a foul on the Chertsey goalkeeper.

Two minutes into the second half and loanee Matt Carson created the best chance of the game for Taunton as he weaved into the box, found Seymour but he couldn’t finish and on the rebound Moulden was frustrated too.

Luffman made a triple change on 73 minutes as Jack Rice, Tom Purrington and Joe Hatch all came on but it was an earlier substitute Owen Brain who carved out another opportunity for Seymour but again he was thwarted by the goalkeeper.

Brain would later get a yellow card for an alleged dive in the box and Taunton would finish the game with 10 men after Joe Hatch got injured and the Peacocks had used all their substitutions.

Chertsey hit Town on the break to seal with win as their own substitute – Daniel Hector – got into the box, rounded Phillips and tapped home to score.

The Peacocks have now won one of their last five league games.
