Taunton Town defeated at home by Poole Town under lights

Taunton Town sunk to their fourth successive defeat on Wednesday, October 22, when Poole Town visited for a midweek fixture.

Despite taking an early lead, Poole Town blew the Peacocks away with four goals in response to claim the three points.

Taunton have now lost their last four games in succession – Chertsey Town, Plymouth Parkway, Sholing and now Poole Town.

Manager Richard Luffman made a couple changes from the side that lost to Sholing with Owen Brain and Jacob Hodgson coming in for Josh Owers and Alfie Moulden.

The Peacocks made a good start, but the visitors had their first chance as a shot comes in on eight minutes from range, but it was easily gathered by Frankie Phillips.

The visitors nearly broke the deadlock four minutes later as Charlie Davis made a late run into the box, but his effort came off the post.

On 23 minutes, former Taunton goalkeeper Alex Parkes thwarted Ben Seymour who had been found by Jack Rice. Ultimately the referee’s assistant flagged for offside in the end.

On 28 minutes, Taunton Town took the lead as Jamie Richards bagged his first of the season. Matt Carson’s corner was cleared but at the second attempt he found Richards who was able to convert from close range.

The lead lasted 12 minutes as it proved third time lucky for Poole. Phillips twice made saves on the goal line to prevent them from scoring but couldn’t stop the third attempt from finding the net.

As the half time whistle neared, Taunton were trying to get back in front with Owen Brain having a shot blocked and Hodgson curling over. But the score remained 1-1 at half time.

Five minutes into the second half, Poole Town took the lead as a misplaced pass from Hodgson found a Poole Town player and Shaq Gwengwe was able to roll the ball into the empty net.

On 53 minutes, Davis had a long range shot which didn’t trouble Phillips. But on the hour mark it was 3-1 as a deep cross was headed in by Gwengwe.

A few minutes later, Poole Town were awarded a penalty and Gwengwe notched his hattrick.

Luffman made a triple change with Tom Purrington, Josh Owers and Alfie Moulden all coming on.

With 20 minutes to go, Jack Rice took down a cross from Carson to test Parkes but that was as good as it got for the home side.

Taunton Town have a break until their next fixture away to Hanwell on Saturday (November 1).
