Aspiring rugby players from Taunton are making their mark on the game's scene.
Taunton Thunders RFC’s under-12s recently took part in the Defender Rising Stars Cup, held at West Buckland School on Sunday, November 30, in Barnstaple and hosted by Exeter Chiefs in partnership with PREM Rugby.
The tournament saw 19 grassroots clubs from across the West Country gather for a day of competitive rugby.
Jack Dean, who plays for the Thunders, said: "The rugby is really good.
"Everyone's passing and hitting tackles hard, the standard is really good and it’s been a lot of fun."
The competition is one of several PREM Rugby events designed to give young players the experience of playing in a professional setting, while introducing them to teams outside their usual leagues.
Thunders coach James Dean said: "What's quite nice for us is we are coming up against a different pool of teams.
"It's great for these guys to come up against new players and tough opposition.
"It's been a really good contest so far, and we are really enjoying it."
The event also captured the attention of professional players.
Exeter Chiefs stars Kane James, Ben Coen, and Finn Worley-Brady attended the festival, watched the games, and presented awards at the closing ceremony.
James said: "What a great day.
"It's impressive to see not only great skill and passion on the pitch but also teamwork and respect from these young players.
"It was great to get an insight into what could be the future of rugby today."
First launched in 2008, the Defender Rising Stars Festival has seen more than 125,000 young players take part, with some progressing to play professionally for PREM Rugby clubs.
Dean Bessant, general manager at Vertu Land Rover Exeter, said: "At Vertu Land Rover, we’re passionate about supporting grassroots rugby because strong communities are at the heart of everything we do.
"Watching these young players show respect, courage, and a real love for the game reflects the values we’re proud to stand behind."
