A street in Somerset has been renamed after Lando Norris to commemorate the motor racing star winning the Formula 1 World Championship.

Norris claimed the title after a podium finish at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, becoming Britain's eleventh F1 world champion and the first McLaren driver to win the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2008.

He is also the second driver from Somerset to win the sport's biggest prize, after Jenson Button, who was born in Frome.

Button has a footbridge named after him in his hometown, and in a similar fashion, a street has been named after the newest F1 world champion.

Signage for the new 'Lando Lane' has been installed on a pedestrianised avenue at Clarks Village in the Somerset town of Street, where Norris attended school for nine years.

The world champion attended Millfield School when he was seven years old, and it was there that he first started kart racing.

Mini Lando-inspired racing cars have also been created for children visiting Lando Lane.

Chris Davis, centre director of Clarks Village, said: “Lando is a local hero and we are all absolutely delighted that he’s been crowned World Champion.

“He spent his formative years here in Somerset, and it was during this period in his life when he took up karting, a path that has ultimately led to him becoming the best F1 driver in the world.

“Renaming our street ‘Lando Lane’ is our way of commemorating this incredible achievement from one of the region’s favourite sons.”

The renamed ‘Lando Lane’ is located off Farm Road, between Apple Court and Orchard Square, at Clarks Village, Street, Somerset.
