Taunton Town FC marked a very special birthday during their FA Cup win over Millbrook on Saturday (September 5).

Club legend Tony Payne turned 80 on the day of the match and was wished a happy birthday by the Peacocks and their fans.

Payne joined Taunton Town as a 17-year-old in the 1963/64 season and went on to play more than 1,000 games for his hometown club as well as scoring more than 250 goals.

He was part of the team that won the Western League Championship in April 1969.

Payne became assistant manager when Taunton Town reached the first round proper of the FA Cup in November 1981 when Taunton played Swindon Town at the County Ground then went on to manage the first team and the reserves before finally hanging up his boots.

A club spokesman said: “Tony is a much-loved and regular supporter, often seen at our home games, sharing in the highs, the lows, and everything that makes this game so special.

“Although Tony can’t be with us today (match day), he is certainly not forgotten.

“Happy birthday Tony we’re all thinking of you on this your special birthday and sending our very best wishes and look forward to seeing you back at the games very soon.”
