TAUNTON Town manager Ian Jones is hoping last Saturday’s FA Cup victory at Clevedon United can kick-start their league campaign.

Goals from Charlie Welch (2) and Sam Jones helped the Peacocks defeat the Toolstation League Division One side 3-0 (see page 116), to earn a trip to Hamworthy United in the first qualifying round on Saturday week.

Jones said the side were not at their best but believes the victory will help them produce consistent displays in the league.

Taunton have lost three of their opening four British Gas Business League Division One (S&W) matches and entertain Slough Town on Saturday.

He said: “It was one of those games where we did enough. I never felt we were in trouble – it was just a matter of when we scored and how many we would get.

“I know they play two divisions lower, but a win’s a win and we’ve got to use it to kick on in the league.

“We haven’t done as well as I would have hoped and we are capable of doing a lot better.

“We have done well in halves of games, we just have to put it all together for 90 minutes, and the wins will come.”

Slough are without a league victory this season, having taken just two points from their opening four matches.

Taunton defender Jamie Price has been told not to play for four weeks after breaking his nose against Clevedon.

Price suffered the injury in a clash of heads after just 12 minutes. He had the nose re-set that night and had an operation on Tuesday.

Stuart Nelson will take Price’s right back slot while he recovers, while Bristol-based Ben Newby, a friend of Matt Rawlins, is also in the squad.

Midfielder Newby, a friend of Matt Rawlins, played local football in Bristol last season. He came on for the last ten minutes at Clevedon.

Meanwhile, centre back Chris Kite has been released by Town boss Jones after failing to secure a regular first team place.
