Division 1 South and West: Abingdon Utd 3, Taunton Town 0.

ABINGDON United hit three goals in the last 16 minutes to condemn Taunton to defeat on Tuesday night and stretch their win-less run to 22 matches.

The Peacocks dominated for the first hour but couldn’t turn possession into goals and paid the price in the closing stages.

Taunton, with Chris McGrath – the son of ex-Manchester United and Republic of Ireland star Paul – making his debut at centre-back, could have gone ahead on three minutes when midfielder Darren Rice curled an effort just wide.

Craig Veale was next to threaten for the visitors, also sending a shot wide of the target 20 minutes into the match.

Taunton continued to press either side of half-time but lacked a cutting edge.

And the hosts, who had hardly threatened the Taunton goal, took advantage on 74 minutes when John Mills fire home after Taunton had failed to clear a corner.

A minute later the lead was doubled as Leon Gordon was allowed to run through the centre and shoot past Lloyd Irish.

Taunton’s misery was complete seven minutes from time when Billy Beechers netted from close range after a goal-mouth scramble.
