Taunton Amateur Boxing Club travelled to Gloucester last Friday night to compete at the Longlevens Thomas Rich’s school hosted by Gloucester ABC.

First in the ring for Taunton was P. Augustynik against twice junior champion of his weight class, S. Davies of Gloucester ABC. Both boxers had three rounds or excellent boxing and Augustynik received a rewarding applause from the spectators and officials but it was Davies who won on a majority decision.

Next in the ring for his first contest was senior novice C. Rae against S. Gibbins of Gloucester ABC. Rae boxed well with good skills during the first two rounds but the referee had to stop the contest in the last round with seconds to go in favour of Gibbins.

Last in the ring was senior novice T. Aplin for his first contest. His opponent was heavyweight A. King of Malmesbury ABC with a win and a loss already to his record. Aplin caught King to the head and body with his powerful punches and concentrated mostly on head shots throughout the bout. King caught Aplin with a combination of body shots but he wasn’t strong enough to stop Aplin who won the contest with a majority decision.

The club travelled to Bodmin last Saturday evening to compete at Bodmin ABC’s home gym. First in the ring for Taunton was junior boxer C. Ackland against T. Davies of Sturminster Newton ABC for their first contest. Both boxers were tidy but Ackland was the main aggressor and won the contest with a unanimous decision.

Next up was T. Power against T. Coppola of Cambourne ABC for a junior contest. Power started well in the first round and moved around his opponent. His distance wasn’t quite accurate but after coming back in the third round with great head and body shots it was Coppola who won the contest by a majority decision.

The third boxer was senior R. Broadway against N. Rowe of St Austell ABC. In the first round Broadway was cautious and kept his distance but in the second round he opened up with his powerful combinations, which proved too much for Rowe with the referee having to stop the contest before the third bell in favour of Broadway.

Last in the ring for the main bout of the evening was J. Cornall against L. Carless for a senior lightweight contest.

On the bell, both boxers met head to head ring centre with Cornall giving Carless a very bad nose bleed. They continued with body shots with neither boxer stepping back.

Carless’ nose bleed had to be tended to by the referee and Cornall’s gloves had to be wiped clean. Both boxers never stopped throwing punches throughout all three rounds but the final decision went to the local lad.
