FORMER Taunton Town striker Shaun Anthony scored on his debut to earn Wellington a point at Shepton Mallet on Tuesday night.

But manager Kevin Evans will be disappointed that his new-look side failed to return home with a win after dominating the game.

Evans included no fewer than five new signings in his squad with Anthony, midfielder Craig Carr and defender Daniel Short all having moved from Bridgwater Town.

They were joined by former Exeter City player Geoff Bresland and Lee Haywood, who have both signed from Newton Abbot Spurs.

Anthony and Bresland were both in the starting line-up and played their part in an impressive Wellington display. Playing up the Shepton slope, they pegged the home side back for long periods in the first half without being able to break the deadlock.

The two best opportunities fell to Craig Herrod but on both occassions he was foiled by goalline clearances when he seemed set to score.

Shepton then took the lead completely against the run of play ten minutes into the second half as Wellington went to sleep from a corner and defender Rocky Nolan was left unmarked to head home.

But the visitors' response was almost immediate as Greg Blenkinsop swung over a cross from the right and Anthony rose to head over keeper Dan Beal.

Evans rang the changes by bringing on all three subs and switching to three at the back in search of victory.

But, apart from a couple of scrambles, the closest they came to scoring was a neat flick by skipper Nick Woon, which was cleared off the post by a defender.

At the other end, a slip by keeper Shaun Locke almost cost his side dear as he spilled a low cross but he made amends with an excellent reaction block to deny Nick Bennett.

Wellington: Locke, Fitzgerald, Blackburn, Holland, Markham, Blenkinsop, Butler, Bresland, Herrod, Woon, Anthony. Substitutes, Carr, Haywood and Short (all used).

On Saturday, Wellington are at home to Biddestone in a league match sponsored by Gill Knott Insurance (3pm).

On Tuesday, night they travel to Minehead for a Somerset Premier Cup tie with the winners at home to Yeovil Town in the next round. Minehead are away to Longwell Green in the Toolstation League on Saturday.
