Wellington returned to their old ways as they crashed 5-1 away to fellow strugglers Shrewton United in division one of the Toolstation league yesterday.
After their excellent midweek win over Welton Rovers and an encouraging first-half display, Colin Merrick’s side fell away badly after the break and conceded four goals thanks to some woeful defending.
Wellington got off to the worst possible start when they fell behind after only two minutes, Shrewton’s ace marksman Dean Foot taking advantage of some hesitant play to shoot past keeper Ryan Lewis, playing his first game since rejoining the club.
But the visitors refused to let the goal unsettle them and drew level after 32 minutes when Ben Martin’s cross was brought down on his chest by Dale Webber, who then drove the ball home.
Wellington almost fell further behind six minutes later as Thomas Judd flicked a low cross against the underside of the bar but it was all-square at the interval.
It was Shrewton who scored the all-important second goal six minutes after the break, Foot volleying his second of the game with Wellington appealing in vain for offside.
And they virtually sealed the points 15 minutes later as Judd was played in to clip the ball over the diving Lewis.
Foot almost completed his hat-trick after 77 minutes but was denied by a diving Lewis only to make no mistake three minutes later following another defensive error.
Wellington substitute Eubio do Rosario almost pulled one back with a long-range drive which smacked against the bar.
But it was Shrewton who had the final say in the final minute – unmarked sub Charlie Young comfortably running in their fifth goal.
