Harry Kane closing in on new Bayern Munich contract

Kane is in the final year of his existing deal with the Bundesliga giants, but has been holding positive talks over extending for some time.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed a prolific time in Germany over the last three years, breaking all sorts of individual records, and is thirsty for more.

“Talks are going well. I’ve been quite open and honest about that,” the England captain said ahead of the Nations League clash with Spain at Wembley.

“We are still in talks now and I think they are progressing in the right way. Both sides have been very relaxed about it.

“Everyone can see I am happy there, the way I’m performing, the way I talk off the pitch. I think it is just open and honest. I am hoping something gets done.

“In terms of how it is affecting me mentally, I just get on with these kind of things. I like to take seasons as they come.

“I’m still contracted for another nine months officially so nothing from that point of view changes but over this camp I am concentrating more on being with England.

“Those contract talks can hold fire, it’s for the team behind me to talk and deal with those things.

“Over the next month or so there should be some sort of decision and I think it will be a positive one.”

Kane will again lead England as they look to move on from the World Cup with their Nations League opener against world and European champions Spain.

Although it is a new season, the inquest surrounding the semi-final defeat to Argentina rumbles on, with Kane suggesting England have played “trying not to lose and we ended up losing anyway” in their biggest moments in recent years.

“The reality is we have got one of the best records in recent history at national level,” he said. “We do have identity with Gareth and Thomas and a lot of that is togetherness, power, strength and physicality.

“I just think in the biggest moments we haven’t shown that, we haven’t shown our true self. I think Argentina was the prime example of that.

“We spoke a lot about trying to win and if you lose, you take it on the chin, you shake hands and you move on.

“I think the last half hour of that Argentina game, the Croatia game in 2018, the Italy game in the Euros, we spent a lot of those games trying not to lose and we ended up losing anyway.

“That’s the hardest part to take, not just as players but from a fan’s point of view. If you try go and try to win 2-0, 3-0 and you end up losing, it is a lot easier to accept.

“I think it is the final shift and that’s a big shift but it is mentality as well as anything else.

“Until you are put in those situations again, you never really know but a lot of our feeling coming off the Argentina game is that we can’t let something like that happen again but we are only going to be judged the next time we are in a situation like that.”
