Cornwall & Devon
Pirates Amateurs 12, Wellington 70

THE Red & Blacks travelled to Pirate Amateurs, based at Penzance, last Saturday in their longest and last away league trip of the season, writes Allyn Chetland

As the score would suggest, this was a difficult afternoon for the Cornish team.

Buoyed by recent encouraging performances, The R&Bs went into the match full of confidence going on to dominate all aspects of the game.

However, it was the hosts who took the lead first and, after 15 minutes of play, the score was 12-12, before The R&Bs took control of the game.

Pirates tried their best to stem the onslaught of tries but their efforts, which at times boarded on illegal and to the dislike of the referee, proved to be in vain.

To the official’s credit, the game never boiled over when it, at times, it easily could have.

For The R&Bs, it was pleasing to see all the patterns and moves practised on the training paddock, to score some delightful tries, being put into operation on match day.

The Wellington try scorers were Neville Pitman (4), George Hodgson (3), Tim Jenkinson (2), Liam Phillips, Chris Kitto and captain Patrick Jarman.

Alex Davey kicked five conversions.

Wellington team: R. Marke, J. Dyke, L. Wadham, S. Jordan, W. Hinchcliffe, C. Kitto, L. Phillips, D. Lee, T. Jenkinson, P. Jarman (c), G. Hodgson, B. Gamlin, N. Pitman, C. Jenkinson, A. Davey, J. Rowlands, R. Walker, J. Weeks.

There will be sterner tests to come during the remaining league games of the season, starting this coming Saturday when Bude travel to the Athletic Ground.

The Cornish outfit are currently lying fifth in the table and will be keen to avenge the home defeat at the hands of The R&Bs earlier on in the season.

ALL matches in the Somerset Premier League, including Wiveliscombe's, were victims of the Easter downpour and will have to be rearranged.

This causes its own problems - finding a date suitable for both teams is nearly impossible this time of the season.

Wiveliscombe have a free date next Saturday but Weston-super-Mare, this week's opponents, play on Friday night against Hornets.

Nailsea & Blackwell (April 14) and St Bernadette's Old Boys (April 21) are Wivey's two remaining fixtures for this season.

Gordano played Minehead on Friday night, winning 55-7, and then won 52-12 at Imperial on Monday to go top, two points up on Wivey.
