Wiveliscombe 10 Winscombe 7

WIVELISCOMBE followed their excellent victory over Tor last week by inflicting the first defeat of the season on Winscombe, in a game where both teams had to defend for all their worth when playing up the slope.

Winscombe were first on the scoreboard crossing for a Robert North try after five minutes. Sam Dursley converted to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.

Wivey’s players and supporters feared the worst having to play up the slope and against the elements but showed tremendous spirit, repelling attack after attack and finding enough energy to mount several attacks of their own.

Home supporters were hopeful their team could gain an impressive victory over their unbeaten opponents but Winscombe, as their hosts, did in the first half, defended bravely.

Although Wivey pinned Winscombe near their own line for long periods, the home team were limited to just one try scored by winger Jake Sharland. Dan Quick converted to level the scores.

Conditions deteriorated and it looked as though the game would end in a draw, which would have been a fair result but in the dying seconds of the match, Winscombe were caught offside in their own 22.

Dan Quick had a chance to win the match though the kick was a difficult one - but he held his nerve and duly won the game for Wivey, who remain fourth in Somerset Premier and travel to Oldfield on Saturday.

WIVEY’S II travelled to Wells for a Somerset 2S encounter and suffered a 14-try defeat to a strong home team who are second in the league.
