MORE than 40 volunteers turned up to help at Wiveliscombe Rugby Club’s Natwest Rugbyforce Weekend.
The day started with a “Big Breakfast” and then the workforce began, and work they did.
The priority was to repair a drain which was spilling storm water across the Recreation Ground and caused a number of games, both senior and junior, to be cancelled last season due to waterlogged pitches.
This task was ably dealt with, the offending concrete block (which had been washed down and wedged in) removed, and the drain repaired.
Many other tasks were tackled, too - hedges trimmed, trees pruned, leaves and weeds cleared, tiling repaired, patios cleaned, grass strimmed and rubbish removed.
A hearty breakfast and lunch were provided by a willing band of volunteers in the kitchen.
Organiser and Wiveliscombe RFC vice-chairman Robert Burston said: “It is amazing how much you can get done when everyone mucks in.
“It was so encouraging that members from all sections of the club came to help - junior players, seniors, supporters, committee members, vice-presidents and sponsors.
“The Recreation Ground is a huge asset to the town so to be able to help in its maintenance and add to people’s enjoyment of it is a pleasure.”
