Wiveliscombe 1st XV 45, Old Redcliffians 2nd XV 10

WIVELISCOMBE maintained their four-point lead at the top of the table after overcoming a more than competent Reds second string, writes Roger Bellamy. 

The home team, playing up the slope, were tested early on as the visitors played some good all-round rugby. 

Their backs in particular looked well drilled and pacy with ball in hand.

The home team's defence held firm, though, and gradually established a foothold in the game. 

Their forwards began to link well, and that put second row Ross Pearson in the clear to sprint in for Wivey's opening try, which was converted by full-back Dan Quick.

Reds continued to create openings but their failure to hold on to the ball on more than one occasion halted their progress in promising positions. 

Wivey, on the other hand, took more of their opportunities, as most of the pressure they created ended in points.

Scrum-half Hugh Kelly scored the home team's second try, finishing in typical fashion after home pressure on the visitors line. 

Quick slotted a good conversion from wide out, before Louis Eve secured Reds' first points of the game with a penalty, to make it 14-3 at half time.

Playing down the slope after the break, the home team went on to score another five tries in front of a good number of supporters. 

Pearson completed a hat-trick, a rarity these days for second rows. 

Prop Matt Ellis scored one of his specialist tries from a set penalty, and three-quarters Richard Wike and Alex Westcott crossed for one apiece. 

Dan Quick converted three of the five tries.

Prop Lieghton Freeman finished off a good phase of play from the visitors to score their one try in the game, which finished 45-10.

Somerset 2 South
Bridgwater 3rd XV 10, Wiveliscombe 2nd XV 43

WIVEY'S second team continued their excellent run of form with a convincing victory, their fourth in a row, which lifts them to fourth in the Somerset 2 South standings – their highest ever league position.

The West Somerset team scored a total of seven tries to secure the win. 
Matt Woollaston was the top points scorer with four tries and two conversions, giving him a total of 24 points in the match. 

George Hale, Zak Small and veteran prop Mark Barrington added the remaining five pointers. 

Gareth Bellamy, playing his first game after a few seasons away from the action, added the remaining two conversions.

There are no matches next week. Fixtures for October 21 - 1st XV v Avon (away), 2nd XV v Martock (home).

Wellington RFC 39, Plymstock Albion Oaks 19 

THE R&Bs achieved their third successive victory, moving up the league as a result, writes Allyn Chetland.

Wellington played some great rugby at times, scoring seven tries in the process, however as expected it was not all plain sailing for The R&Bs. 

The Oaks played some good rugby themselves especially, in the second half, which troubled The R&Bs defence on numerous occasions.

Immediately from kick-off, the R&Bs went on the offensive and launched an attack from the own try line. 

This attack petered out, Oaks turning the ball over just outside their 22m line, numerous phases later saw the dangerous Oaks winger scamper over for an unconverted try. 

Undeterred by this early setback the R&Bs responded with fine forwards try by Harry Ramsay after an attacking lineout, the touchline conversion went wide. 

Further pressure and some excellent attacking moves by the R&Bs resulted in flanker Liam Phillips crashing over for a try, and full-back Alex Davey made no mistake with the conversion. 

The Oaks did have opportunities, but solid defence by the R&Bs halted them in their tracks. 

The hosts further extended their lead when Davey crossed for an unconverted try after great work by centre George Hodgson. 

With half-time fast approaching winger Tyler Hart claimed a fine cross field kick by Patrick Jarman to score the R&Bs fourth, the bonus point try, to take the score to 22-5. 

The conversion went narrowly wide and the score remained 22-5 at half time.

Playing towards the clubhouse in the second period, the R&Bs soon found themselves camped deep in Oaks territory once again and replacement Regan Walker found himself in a bit of space and galloped over for another try. 

Unfortunately the extra points could not be taken and uncharacteristic mistakes crept into Wellington's game which, coupled with The Oaks raising their attacking game and with R&Bs being reduced to 14 players for a 10 minute period, saw the game become somewhat frantic and disjointed. 

The Oaks exploited this and scored a converted try to reduce the lead to 27-12, but Wellington responded with a try by replacement prop Josh Hancock which was converted by Davey. 

The visitors once again raised their game and scored another well worked converted try to again reduce the lead. 

Not to be out done, the R&Bs rallied once more and scored an excellent team try in the dying minutes of the game via winger Ethan Stalker. 

With no further scores by either side, the final score was 39-19 to the home side.

Jason Rowlands once again caught the eye with an impressive performance at loose head prop, with Joe Dyke also having a fine game both in the loose & tight play whilst Regan Walker made a big impact coming off the bench. 

The result was well deserved no question but this game did throw up areas that need to be worked on in training. 

With no game this Saturday, the lads will be working hard at training this week in prep for the difficult trip to Saltash the following the weekend.
