WIVELISCOMBE RFC must be satisfied with the outcome of their 2011-12 campaign after gaining promotion to the Somerset Premier League for next season.

It was a close run thing come the end of season but they finished just one point in front of third place Keynsham.

The first XV lost the first league match of the season but went on to win nine of their next ten games to lay the foundation for an assault on the league title. Just four defeats in the remaining fifteen league matches proved good enough for promotion.

Retirement early in the season for skipper Ollie Burrows was the only disappointment of the season. A reoccurrence of shoulder problems curtailed a promising career for the back rower. Tom Chaffey took over the captaincy and proved a worthy successor.

The first XV finished having won 20 of their 26 league matches and falling just four short of 600 points for the season.

Second team rugby was somewhat disjointed through the season for one reason or another, so they did well to retain their place in the Somerset Two South League finishing in ninth position.

Opportunities were taken to blood older colts when possible giving them valuable game time at senior level rugby. Eight to nine lads join the seniors next season hopefully bringing fresh ideas into the 1st and 2nd teams.

Wivey Colts, as with the 2nds, had a bits and pieces season with disruptions through cancelled matches and weather.

They had a good run in the National Colts Cup losing out to Oxford in the latter stages. This year’s Under-16s will be playing at Colt level next year so their future looks promising.

Junior rugby has flourished within a well organised section at the club under the guidance of junior chairman Huw Davies who is stepping down next season, with Paul Hughes taking over this position.
