FOR the intrepid supporters of Taunton Titans who made the journey to the Forest of Dean last Saturday to see the game against National League 2 South leaders Cinderford, the sun shone all the way and all afternoon, writes Dick Macey.

It was just reward for the travellers with a quality game of rugby, some genuine old-fashioned rugby club humour and hospitality and a glimpse of what might have been had the Titans shown more consistency through the season.

The Titans began in very lively fashion and matched their doughty opponents blow for blow for the first 20 minutes or so.

And they rocked the home side back on their heels more than once and had it not been for an ill-fated lofted pass out to the Titans winger that was easily intercepted by the Cinderford winger and was immediately translated into a converted try under the posts, the half-time scoreline of 22-15 in favour of the Foresters would have had a fairer look about it.

With both sides displaying some real attacking determination coupled with solid defensive work, this absorbing game hung in the balance until the final 15 minutes.

It was then that Cinderford took a firm hold - their running at the Titans’ line with pace and gliding angles made it more and more difficult for the visitors to contain the pressure.

The final scoreline of 41-24 slightly flattered the home side but was sufficient to illustrate their latter dominance. It was an excellent game of rugby played with great spirit and one which should leave the Titans in no doubt as to their potential.

This coming Saturday sees the final home game of the Titans’ season when they entertain league newcomers Tonbridge Juddians, a more than useful side who have acquitted themselves well in their first season at National League 2 level (ko 3pm).

The game will be preceded by a carvery lunch hosted by The Friends, during which The Volunteer of the Year presentation will be made.

Further to the Titans’ season, the Somerset County side will be playing at the commsplus against Hampshire on May 12 and East Midlands on May 19.

And The Friends are organising carvery lunches before each game.

What a great way to round off what has been an excellent season of rugby football.

Come and enjoy some spring fresh air, great food and absorbing rugby - See you there!
