SYDNEY Haynes, headmaster of Queen’s College, Taunton, from 1953 – 1974, has died aged 97 at a nursing home in Taunton. Present headmaster Chris Alcock said: “For many Old Queenians, Sydney was simply ‘Mr Queen’s’.

Sir Chris Clarke OBE 1941-2009 SIR Chris Clarke dedicated decades of his life to the simple task of helping people make the most of their own lives and in particular to giving society’s less fortunate the chances they need to escape the traps of their misfortune, whether imposed by poor education, ill health or just a social environment that offered too little hope.

A THANKSGIVING service for the life of John Williams Garland was held at Temple Methodist Church on Saturday, January 17, following a cremation at Taunton Crematorium. He passed away, aged 88 years, on January 5 at St George’s Residential Home, Taunton, where he had happily lived for the last 15 years of his life and where he enjoyed excellent care.

NEIL Dennis Bruce-Copp OBE, who died on December 31, 2008, aged 66, was a prominent businessman, generous benefactor of numerous charities and a keen sportsman Bruce-Copp was the founder, chairman and chief executive of Targus Group Plc, the internationally known portable PC and computer case Company, which he built into an organisation exporting to over 110 countries with a turnover well in excess of £100m per annum.

JACK Hull, who died on January 15, aged 84 years was widely known in Taunton for his involvement with the amateur stage. He had been a member of Taunton Amateur Operatic Society since 1949 and had taken part in most productions from then until a few years ago. He played many minor roles and sang in the chorus and had played Colonel Pickering in My Fair Lady, Mr Snow in Carousel and Captain Andy in Showboat, when the Gazette headline ran "Captain Andy is Star."
