THE usually quiet streets of Kingston St Mary were awash with colour and people for the first annual pram race.

Organised by villager Tom Lomas, with a team of helpers, the 15 teams of mothers and babies' raced between The Swan and the Green, taking in a number of obstacles.

The winning team was John and Rose Hughes's Dirty Diapers', who won an engraved trophy and champagne.

David Barnes's Pramtastic' was second, with King's Hopefuls', featuring Gordon Rawlings and Baby Ben, a close third.

Other awards were: best effort, Somerset Cider Slurpers', Jimmer Chant and Nick Dampier; best dressed participant, David Barnes; best dressed pram, Under-carriages', Laurence Underhill and Graham Gardner, assisted by Sue Lomas, Jenny McCruden and Verity Underhill.

A profit of more than £1,000 from the event is being donated to the village primary school and Somerset Association for the Blind.

Community fundraiser Gaile Bishop acted as steward and judge and presented the awards and prizes.
